5.1 miles (8.2 km) with 81m of total ascent

The view NE at the start of the walk
The view NE at the start of the walk
This walk starts in the village of Aston to the south-east of Stevenage then follows the River Beane south before looping back through Astonbury Wood, a Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust nature reserve. You will cross a number of arable fields and follow rights of way that could be muddy after rain. There are a few stretches of lane walking. The walk goes through a golf course but not across a fairway.

The village hall car park is open from 8am to 5pm 365 days a year. Management say walkers are welcome to use the car park if there is space as long as they are back at their car by 5pm as the gate is locked then and won't be reopened if cars are locked in.

We parked in one of the residential roads in Aston. If you are travelling by public transport, bus numbers 383 and 390 go through the village. You can check the times using Intalink.

1: With your back to Aston village hall (location - https://w3w.co/manual.corrosive.inhaled) turn left then head NE along Brookfield Lane. There isn't a pedestrian pavement along this stretch but it's a quiet lane with a verge where you can step aside if traffic approaches. Continue for 600m until you reach Ford Lane on the right (location - https://w3w.co/sulked.gums.spans), see image below.

The reserve is managed by the Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust which describes Astonbury Wood (named as Astonbury Woods on the sign) as follows:
"An ancient woodland with sweeping Bluebell carpets, choirs of songbirds, small streams and ponds. Astonbury Wood is one of the richest habitats in Hertfordshire and home to rare, threatened and treasured wildlife."

  2. I enjoyed this walk, except for the parts where you are walking through 8 foot tall corn with a very narrow path.
Good to see Reed Buntings and Yellowhammers.
I stopped at the golf club with its welcoming sign and bought some cake.

    1. Hi Mark, yes, overgrown paths during the harvest season are always a problem. I hope it didn't spoil your day. Thanks for the update. If you haven't already done so, please consider joining our friendly Hertfordshire Walker Facebook group where fellow walkers are sharing their experiences and photos.
