Walk 255: Knebworth North-West Short Loop

5.4 miles (8.7 km) with 101m of total ascent

Knebworth footpath 10 between points 4 and 5
Knebworth footpath 10 between points 4 and 5
This is a shortened version of a longer route across rolling countryside north-west of Knebworth. The original route, Walk 199: Knebworth North-West Long Loop, is 7.6 miles (12.3km) with 153m of total ascent.

Both routes follow well-defined paths crossing open farmland and passing through woodland. The walk starts and finishes at Knebworth train station and is one of several in our collection of linear walks which have been added for those who want to access walks via public transport rather than taking a car.

The route involves 1.4 km of road walking at the start and 1.5 km at the end. However, once you are west of the A1(M) the route mostly follows footpaths and bridleways.

You will walk through the grounds of the Knebworth House estate on public rights of way. You do not have to pay an admission charge to use the public footpaths that cross the estate so long as you don't stray from them and don't visit any of the estate facilities, which includes the cafe and toilets.

The Knebworth House Estate stages concerts and other events, and, in some cases, the public rights of way will be closed while events take place. Please check on the estate's website before you set off to avoid disappointment.

You will pass close to two pubs along the route, The Lytton Arms in Old Knebworth and The Robin Hood & Little John in Rabley Heath. The walk starts and finishes at The Station pub/restaurant opposite Knebworth station. All serve tea and coffee. There are several cafes in Knebworth.

There are signs along the route advising dog walkers to keep their pets on a lead.

The following section through New Wood can often be muddy and overgrown with nettles and brambles. Other walkers have created unofficial detours through the wood to avoid the worst of the mud and overgrowth. However, if you reach this point and the going is tough there is an 'official' detour you could take. To do that turn right on Codicote footpath 28 off Slip Lane just before you reach New Wood (location - https://w3w.co/reef.regard.preoccupied) then head NE for 35m until you meet Knebworth footpath 11 (location - https://w3w.co/twin.cattle.crass). Turn left on Knebworth footpath 11 then head NNE for 710m until you meet a footpath on the left (location - https://w3w.co/free.rare.listed). Turn left on Knebworth footpath 12 then head WSW for 520m until you rejoin the route by turning right on Knebworth footpath 13 (location - https://w3w.co/spells.airless.pollution). See detour map below.

  1. We have done a few of the Knebworth walks and thought we'd try this one out today. Parked a bit further on from the start in Lytton Fields because it looked easier. We wore wellies and without them the route would have been impossible (or impassable!). The road was flooded I think betwen points 5 and 6 and we had to wade through slowly and hope the water didnt come over the top of our boots. Really enjoyable walk though with varied scenery. We got a bit lost in Knebworth because we tried to cut across somewhere to shorten the walk a bit but found our way back to the route. We'd stopped at the Lytton Arms and it was warm enough to sit outside with our drink. Another excellent walk. Thank you David and Ellie.

    2. It was directly in front of the children's playground opposite where you'd come out between the houses at point 2.
