Hertford Heath footpath 9 between points 18 & 19 |
This lovely walk crosses two
Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust nature reserves. You will visit part of
Hertford Heath and then pass through
Balls Wood before looping back along some well-defined footpaths over rolling and open countryside with great views. The walk starts and finishes at
The Goat and passes
The College Arms. The starting point is 1.7 miles SE from Hertford East Station by road.
For those wondering why this walk has Little Amwell in the title and not Hertford Heath, here is a little piece of history. The old village of Little Amwell forms the northern part of the modern village of Hertford Heath. The civil parish of Little Amwell was abolished in 1990, merging with parts of the neighbouring parishes of Great Amwell, Stanstead St Margarets, and Ware to form the new parish of Hertford Heath. Little Amwell remains the name of the ecclesiastical parish which covers Hertford Heath.

The nearest bus stop to the start of the walk is on London Road close to Woodland Road in Hertford Heath (location -

Good shorter variation on the other two Hertford Heath walks I've done (1 from this site). Was a tad mushy through nature reserve but all good underfoot on the rest of the walk and we didn't get lost! . Lovely sunny October day and we ended with a pot of tea in The Goat pub. Perfick! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYes, this route adds that lovely series of footpaths between points 14 & 19 which we really enjoyed. We liked the stretch through Balls Wood, point 7 to point 10, too.
DeleteHi David Nice to get out after all the recent rain . Love Balls Wood . Glad I wore my winter walking boots as was very bogey through Nature Reserve to be expected . Thanks for walk. .IR.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it, despite the boggy conditions. Brave man!! Well done.
DeleteDid this walk today when the sun was shining for a while but glad we had our wellies on for the first time this winter because it was very wet and squelchy through the Nature Reserve and some of the woods. Great open views as well and so quiet we hardly met anyone at all. Would love to do this one again in the spring or summer. Thanks again for another great walk.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can imagine that walk getting muddy. Glad you enjoyed it, despite that. David
DeleteYes definitely squelchy, and pretty treacherous through the clay-y slippy mud in the nature reserve - wellies essential - but beautiful weather made for a super walk. As the world’s worst getting lost worrier, all the directions were pretty much spot on.
ReplyDeleteGlad you didn't slip in the conditions and enjoyed the walk. Thanks for the feedback. David
