Walk 212: Bramfield South Loop

3.7 miles (6 km) with 54m of total ascent

Tewin bridleway 4 between points 17 & 18

This, our third walk from the village of Bramfield, explores the countryside to the S of the village. It includes paths that feature on two of our other walks in the collection, but walked in reverse so the views are different. The route crosses arable land, cuts through one livestock field where horses were grazing when we tested the walk, then follows bridleways and footpaths through woodland.

The walk starts and finishes at The Grandison pub/restaurant on Bury Lane, Bramfield, and has the option of a short detour to The Rose and Crown in Tewin soon after the halfway point. The starting point for the walk is 2.7 miles NW from Hertford North Station by road.

There is a 420m section of lane between points 16 and 17 where there isn't a pavement or a verge.

The Grandison on Bury Lane, Bramfield

1: With your back to The Grandison on Bury Lane (location - https://w3w.co/drives.chief.bunk) turn left and head E for 10m then cross the road and take the footpath that runs down the left-hand side of Bramfield Village Hall (location - https://w3w.co/mouse.newly.status), see image below.

Follow Bramfield footpath 8 S for 195m, with playing fields on your right, until you come to a field (location - https://w3w.co/tall.found.direct), see image below.

2: Continue on Bramfield footpath 8, now heading SSW across two fields for 230m until you reach a group of trees with a telegraph pole in the middle (location - https://w3w.co/roofs.pads.across), see image below.

3: Continue on Bramfield footpath 8 with the trees on your right and heading WSW for 75m until you reach a line of hedgerow on your left (location - https://w3w.co/winner.robot.month), see image below.

Turn left after the hedgerow then head S

Turn left after the hedgerow then head S for 520m, with the hedgerow on your left and field on your right, until you reach a junction (location - https://w3w.co/bland.twigs.teams), see image below.

4: Turn right at the junction on Bramfield bridleway 3 then head WSW for 320m until you reach a junction (location - https://w3w.co/garden.pipes.overnight), see image below.

Turn left on Bramfield footpath 5 then head S

5: Turn left on Bramfield footpath 5 then head S for 220m until the footpath goes through a gap in the hedgerow (location - https://w3w.co/voters.minus.venue), see image below.

6: Continue heading S across a field to more hedgerow (location - https://w3w.co/loft.lives.cult), where you keep heading S, still on Bramfield footpath 5, until you reach a bridleway on the right which cuts through a farm yard with stables on your right (location - https://w3w.co/economies.ritual.icon), see image below.

Turn right then head W through the stables yard

7: Turn right then head W through the stables yard on Bramfield bridleway 6A for 50m until you reach a gate leading into a field where horses might be grazing (location - https://w3w.co/weds.cope.drips), see image below.

8: Cross the field heading NW, still on Bramfield bridleway 6A for 100m until you reach a gate to the left of a line of trees (location - https://w3w.co/ended.films.rails), see orange line between the two horse on the image below.

9: Go through the gate then head WSW then SW on Tewin bridleway 25 for 350m until you reach Hertford Road (location - https://w3w.co/clap.bars.arrive), see image below.

10: Cross Hertford Road then take Tewin footpath 37 on the other side then head SSW for 225m until you reach a junction (location - https://w3w.co/boot.risen.firms), see image below.

Go through a gate on Tewin footpath 18

11: Keep heading straight at the junction through a gate on Tewin footpath 18, see orange arrow on the image above. Continue heading SSW for 55m until you reach a footpath on the right (location - https://w3w.co/kick.remind.wiring), see image below.

Turn right, still on Tewin footpath 18

12: Turn right, still on Tewin footpath 18, then head WNW for 270m until you reach a junction (location - https://w3w.co/stuff.luck.finely), see image below.

13: Turn right at the junction on Tewin footpath 22 then head diagonally to your left across a field heading NW for 240m until you reach woodland. Continue for 25m to a junction (location - https://w3w.co/waters.error.dice), see image below.

14: Keep right at the junction still on Tewin footpath 22 then head NNE for 100m to a footbridge leading to a field (location - https://w3w.co/gather.deputy.sharp), see images below.

Follow Tewin footpath 22 down to a footbridge

Cross the footbridge then head NW across a field

15: Cross the footbridge then head NW for 350m until you reach a gate leading to Hertford Road (location - https://w3w.co/depend.daisy.kick), see image below.

* If you want refreshments, The Rose & Crown (location - https://w3w.co/host.cowboy.statue) in Tewin is 380m left along Hertford Road.

Turn right on Hertford Road then head NE

16: Turn right on Hertford Road then head NE for 420m. This is a narrow section of road without a pavement for pedestrians and with passing places for vehicles. See image below.

Continue along Hertford Road until you reach a bridleway on the left (location - https://w3w.co/grin.newest.violin), see image below.

Turn left on Tewin bridleway 4 then head NE

17: Turn left on Tewin bridleway 4 then head NE for 340m to a junction (location - https://w3w.co/plates.taps.candle) where Tewin bridleway 4 crosses the parish boundary and becomes Bramfield bridleway 4, see image below.

Continue, now on Bramfield bridleway 4, for 70m to a junction (location - https://w3w.co/junior.sake.change), see image below.

Turn left on Bramfield bridleway 3

18: Turn left at the junction on Bramfield bridleway 3 then head NNW for 70m until you reach a junction where the bridleway forks to the right (location - https://w3w.co/wash.bucket.maybe), see image below.

19: Keep right at the fork then follow Bramfield bridleway 3 N then NNE for 610m until you reach a footpath on the right (location - https://w3w.co/scrap.prompting.cone), see image below.

20: Turn right on Bramfield footpath 11 then head W for 210m until you reach a junction where Bramfield footpath turns left (location - https://w3w.co/loving.doctor.tests), see image below.

22: Keep left, still on Bramfield footpath 11, then follow the footpath in an easterly direction as it weaves through the woodland for 330m until you reach a field (location - https://w3w.co/method.rested.thick).

Turn right when you reach the field, still on Bramfield footpath 11

23: Turn right when you reach the edge of the woodland, still on Bramfield footpath 11, then head SSE for 95m until you reach a junction (location - https://w3w.co/stews.traps.mutual), see image below.

Turn left then head E along Bury Lane back to the starting point

24: Turn left at the junction then head E for 240m along Bury Lane, which is also Bramfield footpath 7, back to the starting point.
