Walk 152: Breachwood Green North Loop

6.3 miles (10.1km) with 174m of total ascent

Offley footpath 4 between points 5 & 6
Offley footpath 4 between points 5 & 6
This is a lovely walk through the rolling countryside east of Luton airport. There are a couple of footpaths which were overgrown when we did this walk in July 2021. We always carry a stick and a pair of secateurs to push back any nettles or cut back any overhanging brambles. Long trousers would probably be a good idea. All the footpaths were passable when we did the walk.

There is one stretch between points 18 & 19 where we had to navigate over a ploughed field. We have added an image and an extra map to help with this short section.

* When we did this walk on 26 July 2021 the field had just been ploughed and the path had not been reinstated, so we have added a yellow arrow on the image below and created a map to help you navigate this next section because we were using GPS navigation but it might be difficult for those using maps.
The first image shows the route across the field. Aim for the white-topped post just to the left of the white house. The map below shows the route in a satellite map image.

  1. The junction (point 11) - sign post has been knocked down. Point 18 - “cross field to white top post” - no visible path due to crops so had to double back and go straight ahead after going through the gate (point 18). All areas mentioned as ‘overgrown’ were indeed overgrown. Lovely walk though.

    1. Hi, thanks for the feedback. We did the section you mentioned at point 18 recently and it was overgrown but we managed to get through. It's a real problem this time of the year. Hertfordshire County Council has a page for reporting rights of way issues, such as overgrown paths (encroachment), broken signs etc. If you have time perhaps you could report the issues and, hopefully, the county's rights of way team will look into it. Here is the link. https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/services/highways-roads-and-pavements/report-a-problem/report-a-highway-fault/public-rights-of-way/public-rights-of-way.aspx

  3. Did this yesterday, a flood at point 11, use the road to your left as a detour if required (turn right at end of road to rejoin the route). Also a LOT of nettles around the whole route, one stretch was really bad, and 25m long, so be warned to cover up and take something to help you get through them. Also, the Rape Seed crop, 6 feet high, was severely affecting the path in 2 areas on the route. Maybe wait for a cooler season to do this one!
