Walk 109: Aldenham Loop

4.7 miles (7.5 km) with 87m total ascent

A circular route in the Colne valley to the north of Aldenham taking in some old byways through farmland, paths through parkland, and a stretch alongside the River Colne with opportunities for dogs and children to paddle.

This route often gets flooded after heavy rain. If it's been raining recently it's probably worth choosing a different walk. This route is probably one to save for dry weather.

Thanks to Sophie and Mike for recommending this walk. Their route was a slightly shorter loop which we extended by about two miles.

  1. We have done this walk lots of times in all seaons and have often had to alter the route because of flooding. Today was fine although it was a bit muddy along some parts and a bit wet after the rain when you brush pass the long grass or nettles. Saw lots of horses, butterflies and birds along the way. When we walked through the Munden estate we hardly saw a soul and had the place to ourselves. Passed the spot on the river where I have had a paddle in the past but not warm enough today. Easier to park up the hill on the road past the start of the walk (opposite direction from the church) because its always busy round the church for parking on a Sunday morning. Not tried the Round Bush which you show on the map but drove into Radlett which has a lot of choice for coffee or more. This walk is still one of our favourites.

  2. I made a vague attempt at this one yesterday and it was impassable due to flooding at points 4 and 10 (plus another one in between that I also tried). I'll put a few photos on the Facebook group. I started on the Munden Estate so I stayed that side the whole time as couldn't get across to Aldenham without a huge detour.

    1. Sorry to hear that the walk was flooded. It's always worth checking the government's flood alert page after heavy rain to check whether public rights of way are likely to be affected. The link is below.

  3. Hi, I tried this walk again today and had success! The crossings over the Colne are passable. It was a bit muddy by the bridge at point 9 but nothing like how it has been in the last few months (when the whole field was totally under water). Lovely walk, very peaceful as just me and a few dog walkers around. The path through the golf course is great - very enclosed so no crossings of fairways (my fear!).
