This walk starts and finishes in the village of Ayot St Lawrence. It passes the former home of the late George Bernard Shaw at Shaw's Corner, before heading south to the Ayot Greenway, a path that follows the route of the old railway that used to run from Welwyn Garden City to Wheathampstead. It then turns north through Lamerwood, an area where rare breeds are being raised and cared for, before heading east back to the starting point.

You will follow paths through woodland, across open countryside, and walk along tree-lined tracks through a country estate. You can park in the lane close to The Brocket Arms, which serves real ale and bar food. It also has a restaurant. Check opening times to avoid disappointment.

The route can be a bit muddy in parts after rain. There is one short section of quiet country lane at the start and finish, so take care because you will need to share this bit of road with vehicles.

Continue heading NW for 300m until you reach a gate (location - https://w3w.co/takes.took.beans), see image below.

  3. Did this walk today to check it for the WGC U3A walking group to tackle next week. It's a great walk and we did it last when Bride Hall Lane was so flooded at the bottom as it comes off the Codicote Road that we couldn't attempt the Bride Hall route. We plan to do it the other way round as the sun was in our eyes all the way along the Greenway. We are finding your website a valuable resource David, it makes planning simple, thanks a lot. PS the Brocket Arms still has rhubarb cider, worth going a long way for!

    1. Glad you enjoyed the walk. And great idea doing it in reverse to avoid walking into the sun (although I guess that considering the route along that stretch goes east to west the problem changes if you are walking in the morning or afternoon). If you and your group members have not already joined, please consider joining our Hertfordshire Walker Facebook group where fellow walkers are sharing their walking experiences. It's a friendly and helpful group.
