A bridleway along the route |
If you are walking this route in wet weather be prepared for a muddy section in the woodland between points 2 and 3. In the summer you will probably encounter nettles and brambles on some footpaths. A hiking pole is always handy in such conditions.
* There is a detour you could take to avoid the worst of the mud by turning left at point 2 then heading NW on Tewin footpath 33 for 480m to a road called East Riding (location - https://w3w.co/filer.moment.recent). Turn right on East Riding then head N for 210m until you reach a road on the right called Firs Walk (location - https://w3w.co/gold.fires.woods). Turn right on Firs Walk then head ENE for 250m where the road bends left (location - https://w3w.co/vital.scenes.guitar) then heads NNE for 250m to a junction (location - https://w3w.co/sunk.wires.still). Turn right, still on Firs Walk, then head ESE for 90m to rejoin the route at point 3 (location - https://w3w.co/leap.lace.slang). See map below with the main route in green and the detour in orange.

1: The walk starts from The Plume of Feathers car park (location - https://w3w.co/state.part.rail). Head to the left of the pub then turn right to reach a field. You will see the beer garden on your right. This is where you will return at the end of the walk. Follow the footpath, Tewin footpath 32, N for 240m to a footpath junction (location - https://w3w.co/hatch.wakes.event).
2: Ignore the path going off to your left and continue heading N. After crossing a field you will walk behind a line of houses where the path can be muddy after rain. Continue for 900m until you meet a private road with a house on your right.
3: Turn slightly right then head NE for 15m. Follow the path to the left boundary of the house (location - https://w3w.co/armed.settle.fully), climb some wooden steps and turn left at the top, still on Tewin footpath 32, and then head NW, NE, and NW for 550m until you reach Burnham Green Road (location - https://w3w.co/closed.holly.cute).
4: Here you turn right and head NE for 80m looking out for a footpath on the left (location - https://w3w.co/cats.twin.tilt). Follow this footpath, Datchworth footpath 22, NW for 360m until you reach Coltsfoot Lane (location - https://w3w.co/poems.cones.tight).
5: Turn left and head W along Coltsfoot Lane for 270m until you pass Coltsfoot Retreat. Look out for a path on your left, Datchworth footpath 17 (location - https://w3w.co/safe.trick.shall).
6: Take this footpath and head SW for 780m over open fields with great views and continue until you reach White Horse Lane (location - https://w3w.co/scenes.input.broken).
7: Turn left on White Horse Lane and head S for 190m into Burnham Green. You pass The White Horse on your right, which has a nice beer garden. At the junction continue SSE along Orchard Road for 200m looking out for a footpath on your right (location - https://w3w.co/unions.wing.bounty).
8: Take this path and then take the right-hand fork (location - https://w3w.co/fees.latest.ocean) and head SW for 750m until you reach a footpath junction (location - https://w3w.co/foam.knee.logic).
9: Turn left on Welwyn footpath 34 and head SW for 300m to Pennyfathers Lane (location - https://w3w.co/puzzle.bars.mild).
10: Turn left and head SE on Welwyn bridleway 36 for 500m to a crossing in the tracks (location - https://w3w.co/jars.jazzy.bless).
11: Continue heading SE, now on Tewin bridleway 6 for 780m down the hill and up again through Dawley Wood, emerging at the other side. Continue on Tewin bridleway 6 over open fields and downhill to another crossing in the track (location - https://w3w.co/vanish.when.manliness).
12: Turn left here on Tewin BOAT 1 (byway open to all traffic) and head NE for 440m. When you reach a T-junction in the track (location - https://w3w.co/deck.first.album) turn left and head N with the cricket pitch on your right. Soon after the cricket pitch there is a path along its NW edge (location - https://w3w.co/jams.always.paints). Take this path.
13: You will emerge on Upper Green Road (location - https://w3w.co/shield.hoot.wasp). Turn right and head SE for 110m until you reach a footpath on the left (location - https://w3w.co/cages.rests.latter).
14: Take this path, Tewin footpath 31, and follow it for 210m NE, SE, and then S back to the pub and into the beer garden or car park.
There is a cafe, The Country Bumpkin, (location - https://w3w.co/order.dish.amber) which is 440m NE of the start/finish point of the walk.

Did this walk today. A little confused at the start. I've done several walks on this site and they've all had pictures and been very straight forward. This one was a little more challenging but the interactive map helped. Really enjoyed seeing the alpacas and a beautiful Highland cow. Happy to share some pictures of points along the route to help others.
