Walk 37: Three Ridges Loop

9 miles (14.5 km) with 220m total ascent

Pond between points 2 & 3

This walk connects several of our earlier walks by adding one short path near Epping Green. The route crosses three ridges with excellent views and follows well-defined tracks most of the way. It can be hilly along the way with seven pubs either on the route or a short detour off it.

Please note that this route involves walking along a section of The Hertfordshire Way which goes along Cucumber Lane where there is no pedestrian pavement. The lane has always been quiet on the dozens of times we have walked it but a user of Hertfordshire Walker has reported (October 2024) that it was busy when they walked the route. There is also a section of Grubbs Lane where there isn't a pedestrian pavement and which can be busy during rush hour. Walking groups or those walking with children might want to choose a different walk.

Getting there

There are bus stops outside The Crown pub in Newgate Street (location - https://w3w.co/certified.young.vivid), which are served by the number 308 and 380 buses. You can check bus times at Intalink.

5: Turn left here, still on Little Berkhamsted bridleway 22, and continue NNW, NNE, and NW for 780m along a ridge with great views on your left. You will pass Little Berkhamsted Cricket Club on your right.
* You have the option of turning right down a footpath just past the cricket club if you want to visit Little Berkhamsted village where there is Emmie Murphy's village store which serves hot drinks and snacks, and a pub/restaurant The Five Horseshoes.
Otherwise continue, still on Little Berkhamsted bridleway 22, to Little Berkhamsted Lane (location - https://w3w.co/slides.boxer.nurses).

  1. Hi David, Can this walk be modified to be a 5 mile walk starting and finishing at the Beehive? I have used 178 previously which I will use again if necessary but another of our members is leading a walk and plans to do walk 25 which uses parts of 178 so it would be good if I can do something different. The walk is planned for 28 October. Many thanks, Regards, Robert Knight robert.knight90@ntlworld.com

    1. Hi Robert, figuring out loops that include the Beehive without involving sections of busy roads or lanes is hard. Apart from those I have already planned and mapped and which are on the site there isn't really an easy option. However, if your walking group is happy to walk along some lanes, there is one option I can see. I will email you the outline and see if that works for you. It's five miles as requested.

  2. Hi David. I did this one today. Nice walk, very quiet. The roads weren't a problem at all. Nice mix of woodland and footpaths through the fields.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it Emma. I need to revisit that route and add some photos. I think we last walked that route more than seven years ago.
