Walk 27: Broxbourne Wood North Loop

Another walk through Broxbourne Nature Reserve, this time taking the northern loop. The route is well-signposted throughout. Just follow the waymark posts with the green arrows and the White Admiral butterfly. When you have done this, try our Walk 26: Broxbourne Wood South Loop.

1: Park in the Broxbourne Nature Reserve car park east (location - https://w3w.co/pans.excuse.making), grid reference TL 32751 06932, and head E walking parallel to the road on your right and then turn left deeper into the woods (the route is marked in purple on the map above and in the embedded brochure below). Continue following the path until it heads SE marked in green and blue in the map above before reaching Pembridge Lane (location - https://w3w.co/middle.purple.submit).

2: Cross Pembridge Lane then head SE for 270m on Brickendon Liberty footpath 15, before turning left on Brickendon Liberty footpath 25 then heading N for 190 back to Pembridge Lane (location - https://w3w.co/senior.drift.sunset). Cross the lane and head N on Brickendon Liberty footpath 13 for 480m before reaching a left turn.

3: Turn left here, still on Brickendon Liberty footpath 13 then head NW for 710m until you reach the edge of the woodland. Head NNE across a field for 510m until you reach a path on the right (location - https://w3w.co/puzzle.usage.stars).

4: Turn right and head NNE for 800m on Brickendon Liberty footpath 10 until you reach Monk’s Green (location - https://w3w.co/sober.supply.shield).

5: Continue heading E through Monk’s Green for 200m until you reach Brickendon Liberty footpath 12 (location - https://w3w.co/winner.timing.juror). Follow this footpath along the northern edge of the woodland for 930m until the footpath branches off to the left. At this point you continue walking along the northern edge of the woodland for 370m before reaching a left turn in the path (location - https://w3w.co/tuck.boxer.spite).

6: Turn left on Brickendon Liberty restricted byway 24 for 95m before branching off to the right and following the footpath through the woods as it curves first N, then E, S, SW and SE for 1.3km.

7: Now head W along the southern edge of the woodland for 1.1km.

8: Here you turn left on Brickendon Liberty footpath 14 and head SE for 470m before reaching a path on the right.

9: Turn right and follow the path, Brickendon Liberty footpath 20, for 1.6km as it weaves W and then SW through the woods and meets Brickendon Liberty footpath 13 where you turn left for 110m before turning right and following the track through the woods and back to the car park.

  1. How do you access this walk by train?

    1. I suggest you catch a train to Bayford then either walk in an easterly direction along Brickendon Lane for 1.5km to join the route at point 4. That would add about two miles to the walk. Alternatively you could catch the 308 bus from Bayford Station to The Farmers Boy pub in Brickendon and walk from there. There are two buses a day from Bayford to Brickendon, 8.17am and 13.02pm. The buses from Brickendon back to Bayford are at 8.19am and 13.04pm. Best to check at Intalink to make sure they are running before you set off.
